Colombo, May 7, (dpa/GNA) – Former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed has sustained injuries in an explosion outside his residence in the capital Male, but was in a stable condition, officials said on Friday.
Nasheed, who is the current Parliament speaker, was leaving his leaving his residence in Canaryge, located in Galolhu district of the capital on Thursday night when the explosion took place, a senior police officer said.
Initial reports said the explosives were placed on a motorcycle close to Nasheed’s car.
Hospital officials said Nasheed suffered multiple injuries but was in stable condition.
Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Nasheed, 53, was the country’s first democratically elected leader following the introduction of a multi-party system in 2008. He resigned in 2012 following a coup d’etat that he said was led by the police and army.
Solihi was backed by Nahseed’s party – the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) – in the 2018 elections.
