Bongo (U/E), April 11, GNA – The A-ensonga Hearts, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has constructed a borehole to provide potable water for pupils of Ayopia Kindergarten and Primary School in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.
The pupils, until the construction of the borehole, had to spend most of the time waiting to drink water during break time and in the process lost some contact hours.
Ms Kenndicta A-ensonga Ajene, the Founder of the NGO, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the initiative to provide water for the school was to reduce the stress pupils went through in search of water.
She said during the NGO’s initial visit to the school to present some learning materials and snacks to the pupils as part of its “Back to school project” to support a deprived school in the Region, it realised that the biggest challenge the school faced was lack of water.
The pupils have to walk to the community borehole which is quite a distance to fetch water when they are thirsty and return to class, she said.
Ms Ajene said her outfit provided water bottles to about 480 pupils to enable them to take water from home to school while it worked to fix the water situation in the school.
The Founder expressed gratitude to the Franciscan Friars in the United States of America for the funds and said the NGO would extend support to other deprived schools in the Region.
Mr Rainer Alepoore Apeema, the Headmaster of the Ayopia Kindergarten and Primary School, said the support by the NGO would minimise the length of time spent by pupils at boreholes in the community.
“It is very important. The boreholes in the community are very far from the school and during break time or after meals most of the children run to them and spend a lot of time there to drink water,” he said.
The Headmaster said there were inadequate classrooms to accommodate the pupils coupled with the lack of furniture, which affected academic work and appealed to other NGOs to support the school.
