Assin-Fosu (C/R), April 16, GNA – The Assin-Fosu Divisional Command of the Ghana Police Service has impounded forty-one motorcycles in a special operation as part of efforts to clampdown on robberies and indiscipline on the roads.
Chief Inspector Joseph Boateng, with the Divisional Command of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTD) disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Assin-Fosu.
He said the riders would be screened and those found to have contravened the motor traffic regulations would be put before court.
The motorcycles were impounded for various traffic offences, most of whom were riding with more than one pillion rider and no proper documentation.
“The drivers were apprehended for riding unregistered motorcycles, riding without licence, helmet and carrying more than one pillion rider, among others,” he said.
Chief Inspector Boateng explained that accidents on the roads could be avoided if users of the road strictly respected road safety protocols and drivers lived up to expectations and did not continue to misconduct themselves.
Therefore, he said the commitment on the part of all stakeholders especially drivers to adhere to motor-traffic rules and regulations was vital to protecting lives.
The loss of innocent lives as well as preventable injuries associated with road crashes in the country, according to him, could be curtailed if drivers were more cautious on the road.
He also called on pedestrians to use the appropriate crossings available and not to cross roads unconsciously and urged passengers on board vehicles to politely talk to the divers when they drive above their speed limits.
Touching on overloading of vehicles which is a common sight, the Chief Inspector urged drivers to avoid overloading and drink driving for their own safety.
