New York, March 18, (dpa/GNA) – A bowl bought at a yard sale sold for more than 720,000 dollars at a New York auction after it turned out to be an antique dating back to the Ming dynasty, Sotheby’s said on Wednesday.
The “exceptional and rare” blue and white “floral” bowl, dating back to the Yongle period of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), was bought at a yard sale in Connecticut last year for 35 dollars, the auction house said.
The bowl, whose estimated value before the auction was 300,000-500,000 dollars, was sold for 721,800 dollars. The seller and buyer were not named. It was dated to the early 1400s.
Only six other bowls of this type are known, most of them in renowned museums such as the British Museum in London.
