NWPL 2020/2021: Berry Ladies beat Thunder Queens to maintain top spot

Accra, Feb. 21, GNA – It was all joy and excitement for Berry Ladies after posting a 3-1 victory over a 10-women Thunder Queens in match-day five of the National Women’s Premier League (NWPL) played yesterday at the Madina AstroTurf in Accra.

Thunder Queens finished the match with 10 players after Leticia Adjei was shown a red card following a foul on Berry Ladies’ Philomena Abeka in the second half.

The win gives Berry Ladies, formerly Halifax ladies, 15 points after five matches to maintain her unbeaten run in the NWPL 2021/2021 season and maintain top spot on the Southern Zone league log.

It was Berry Ladies’ Thelma Baffour who drew first blood for her side in the 20th minute. The homers continued searching for more goals until Thunder Queens were presented with a free-kick, an opportunity to draw level but missed the chance.

Nine minutes after the homers goal, Constance Agyemang doubled the lead for Berry Ladies and protected the two crucial goals before recess.

From the break, Berry Ladies continued piling pressure on Edna Quagraine’s charges which proved futile for Agyemang to grab a brace to give Berry’s third.

It looked a herculean task for the Queens to surmount a 3-0 score-line.

To prevent this, Berry Ladies FC Coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo substituted Hannah Buabeng for Rashida Ibrahim and GFA Nasco Player of the Month for January, Felicity Asante for Faustina Worwornyo with 27 minutes to end regulation time.

With five minutes to end the match, Berry Ladies defended their lines well but Vivian Konadu grabbed a consolation goal for Thunder Queens in the 85th minute to end the game 3-1.

At the end of the match, Salma Jaibril of Thunder Queens was adjudged the NASCO Player of the match.
