US congressman: Two Capitol police officers suspended over riot

Washington, Jan. 12, (dpa/GNA) – Two Capitol police officers have been suspended for their behaviour as a pro-Trump mob stormed the building and forced lawmakers into hiding last Wednesday, US Congressman Tim Ryan told reporters Monday.

One officer was suspended for taking a selfie with rioters and another was suspended for putting on a MAGA (Make America Great Again) hat and directing people, Ryan told reporters.

The acting police chief saw their acts as immediate grounds for suspension, he added.

Ryan said between 10 and 15 other officers were under investigation.

There was no immediate confirmation from the police force.

Ryan is chair of a subcommittee which oversees the US Capitol Police.

Capitol Police chief Steven Sund has already stepped down amid criticism of the force’s handling of the rioters.
