Washington, Jan. 10, (dpa/GNA) – Three suspects have been charged in federal court in connection with the storming of the Capitol building in Washington earlier this week, the US Department of Justice said on Saturday.
Among them was Jacob Anthony Chansley, who also goes by the alias Jake Angeli, of Arizona, believed to be one of the people whose image was shared around the world in the wake of Wednesday’s riot.
Chansley stood out in the crowd with his horned bearskin headdress, red, white and blue face paint, bare torso and carrying a spear mounted with a US flag, the Justice Department said in a statement.
He has been charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct.
His arrest comes the day after police detained Adam Johnson, who faces an additional theft charge along with trespassing and violent entry.
Johnson had allegedly stolen the lectern of Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the statement said.
A widely circulated photo shows a man carrying Pelosi’s lectern and waving it at the camera.
The third suspect to be arrested was Derrick Evans, a member of the House of Representatives of the state of West Virginia.
Prosecutors said Evans shared a video of his intrusion into the Capitol live on his Facebook page.
The West Virginia House of Delegates on Saturday released a statement from the 35-year-old saying he was resigning.
“I take full responsibility for my actions, and deeply regret any hurt, pain or embarrassment I may have caused my family, friends, constituents and fellow West Virginians,” Evans’ statement said.
On Friday, a suspect believed to be the man seen smirking proudly in Pelosi’s office chair was arrested. Richard Barnett was arrested in Little Rock in the state of Arkansas.
The justice department is also presenting at least 14 other charges under federal law. One of the suspects is accused of having had 11 incendiary devices and weapons in his car parked nearby.
