Accra, Jan. 19, GNA – The various Schools at Nima in the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly have put in place strict measures to ensure that the COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols are adhered to as schools reopen for the commencement of academic activities.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) in a visit to some of the Schools in the community observed that hand washing materials such as Veronica buckets containing water, liquid soap and tissue papers were visibly put in place at various strategic points in the Schools.
At the Nima Cluster of Schools, the pupils were religiously following the safety protocols: wearing of nose masks and also washing their hands per the World Health Organisation and Ghana Health Service directives.
The GNA notice that only a few of the pupils were without nose mask whiles others had theirs bellow the chins.
Dr Comfort Kwegyire-Aggrey, Deputy Director of Nursing Service of the Greater Accra Region, Regional Health Nurses, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the health directorate was monitoring the adherence of the protocols.
“We are visiting the schools to see how the pupils were observing the Safety protocols and also to screen the Kindergarten and the Primary one pupils to see if their nutritional status was okay,” she said.
She said they screen their eyes and hearing to ensure they have good eyesight and hearing for learning adding that those with health problems were referred to the nearest health facility for treatment.
Dr Kwegyire-Aggrey said they were also checking the pupils on their COVID-19 status and that anybody found to have symptoms of the disease would be referred to the appropriate facility for treatment.
She said they were also encouraging the pupils to always wear their nose masks and also teaching them about the importance of wearing the mask instead of putting them in their pockets.
Dr Kwegyire-Aggrey added that the screening was an annual event they do for the new entrants to the various schools in Accra.
She said the Screening exercise would take place in all the schools in the Greater Accra Region made up of 819 public schools and over 2000 private schools.
Dr Kwegyire-Aggrey added that the exercise would continue throughout the year to ensure all the new entrants in the Schools were screened.
She said they were screening the Kindergarten and the Primary one pupils, adding, “every School has been mapped to a health facility so that when we detect any health problem, we refer them to the health facility.”
Also, the GNA visit the ST Kizito R/C Basic School and the Presbyterian Private Basic School Nima, where COVID-19 safety materials were in the place.
At the Great Tina Hope of Glory School, a Kindergarten School the GNA observed adherence to the protocols.
