Germany beefs up security around parliament after US unrest

Berlin, Jan. 10, (dpa/GNA) – Police have beefed up security around Germany’s federal parliament in Berlin following the unrest this week in the US Capitol, the Sunday tabloid Bild am Sonntag reported, citing a letter to lawmakers from Bundestag president Wolfgang Schaeuble.

“Berlin state police have already called for forces to be increased in the area around the Reichstag building,” Schaeuble was quoted as saying.

He had requested a report from Germany’s Foreign Office on the riots in the US and would “clarify with the federal government and the state of Berlin what conclusions can be drawn from this in order to safeguard parliament,” Schaeuble added.

A police spokesman had already said on Thursday that protective measures for important buildings in Berlin would be “adjusted.” This related to the former Reichstag building which houses parliament and locations with links to the US.
