Sydney, Jan. 18, (dpa/GNA) – Two women and three men have been charged with stealing some 250 tonnes of salmon, worth over 4 million Australian dollars (3 million US dollars) from a processing plant in Sydney, New South Wales (NSW) police said on Monday.
Police began investigating in December 2020 after the executive of a salmon farming and processing company found that some 600 kilograms of salmon per day went missing from its processing plant at Ingleburn, in south-west Sydney.
Inquiries resulted in the arrest of two female and three male employees. All five have been fired by the company.
Police said that the five “used their roles within the company to falsely grade premium salmon products as waste, which was then removed from the plant and transported for on-sale or traded for other product.”
The syndicate allegedly stole more than 250 tonnes of salmon between June and December 2020, according to police.
