Jakarta, Jan. 11, (dpa/GNA) – The death toll from two landslides in Indonesia’s West Java province rose to 19, with many still missing, the country’s disaster agency said on Monday.
At least 18 were injured and 150 rescued after the landslides triggered by heavy rain late Saturday in Sumedang district, National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Raditya Jati said.
The first landslide killed eight people, but another hit after first responders arrived in the evening, killing 11 including rescue workers, a local police chief, and the head of the local civil protection, Raditya said.
“According to information from local officials, many people are still buried under the mud,” he said. He did not provide an estimate.
Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season from October to March.
