Washington, Jan. 12, (dpa/GNA) – Acting US Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf is resigning.
Wolf said in a letter to department employees sent Monday that he was stepping down due to “recent events” including legal challenges over the validity of his appointment, and that he had originally intended to serve until the end of Donald Trump’s administration.
Pete Gaynor, head of the emergency agency FEMA, will take over as acting chief of homeland security, Wolf wrote in the message to colleagues that he posted on Twitter.
His resignation comes with just over a week left of Donald Trump’s term in office before president-elect Joe Biden is due to be inaugurated.
Since the riot at the US Capitol last week, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao have also resigned their posts.
