NCCE urges youth to be ambassadors of peace

Saltpond (C/R), Dec 6, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on the youth to support national efforts towards peace in the 2020 general elections.

It said Ghana was a shining example of a stable democracy in the sub-region and the world hence the need for the youth to ensure and maintain the peace before, during and after the elections.

The NCCE made the call at a day’s workshop for political party youth activists at Saltpond with funding from the European Union (EU).

Mrs Judith Adomako Ofosuaa, the Mfantseman District Director of the NCCE, urged the youth to work together with the Commission to consolidate the peace by fostering friendship even in the face of divergent views and provocations.

The District Director said the workshop was aimed at educating the youth to embrace peace in their endeavours ahead of the polls.

She said, “As a country we must foster peace to achieve a common goal, rather than to fight ourselves.”

Mr Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed, the Deputy Regional Director of the NCCE, educated the youth on the code of conduct for political parties, vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019.

He advised the participants to disband themselves from any vigilante group, adding that there were punishments and sanctions for such acts in the country.

Mr Mohammed explained that the election was about democracy and urged them to resist unnecessary fights and insults that could generate into violence during the election.

He urged the youth to go out on Monday, December 7 to vote for competent leaders to improve national development.

Detective Inspector Clement Ankrah, a representative from the Ghana Police Service, asked the youth to avoid taking shot of ballot papers after voting as it was against the law.

He trained participants on the Public Order Acts and Election and Prospect and Challenges in the country.

Mr Owusu Ansah, the Mfantseman Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), urged participants to trust the Commission to conduct free, fair and transparent election.

He advised the youth to refrain from interfering in electoral processes because it could lead to violence at the polling centres.
