Tema, Dec. 27, GNA – MTN Ghana has given out hampers to mothers of Christmas Season babies at the Tema General Hospital.
The hampers have newborn baby items such as clothing, detergents, sanitizers, among others, intended to help the mothers as they recover from the tears and struggles of child birth.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the presentations at the Maternity Unit of the Tema General Hospital, the Manager, Sustainability and Social Impact, MTN, Madam Rhoderlyn Entsua-Mensah, said this was an exercise MTN undertook every year to make the story of mothers of newly delivered babies more memorable.
Madam Entsua-Mensah said one of the key areas of focus for the MTN Foundation was health, “And maternal and child health is an area we are very prominent in; it is an area that is close to our hearts, so anything to brighten the lives of mothers, babies and children, we are here for it.”
She observed that Boxing Day was a day for giving gifts and should be a time to share the love of Christ and the love that MTN had for Ghanaians.
A Midwifery Officer at the Maternity Unit, Madam Priscilla Adu, in appreciating the gesture, said MTN built a maternity unit for the hospital, “Which has a labour ward, a post CS unit, and a theatre. So we have two theatres running for the maternity unit, which help us a lot because when we have emergencies and other issues, we have a place that we take them to…”
Madam Adu said the mothers appreciated what MTN had done and called on MTN and other organizations and individuals to do more since a lot of the women had challenges with finance and other issues and needed assistance.
The Deputy Director, Nursing Services, representing the Peadiatric Unit, Tema General Hospital, Madam Nelly Enyimah, appealed to MTN to help fix the broken down machines and equipment at the maternity unit which affected their work.
A mother who gave birth on Christmas day, Patricia Asiam, was happy for the gift, observing that it was a favour they least expected. “I pray their work prosper because what they’ve given us would help us a lot.”
Madam Asiam was grateful to God for giving birth on the 25th of December. “This is a special day because that was her first child, so this gesture of MTN makes my joy double which makes me really excited this Christmas.”
MTN Ghana is distributing 250 hampers in ten regions in Ghana, this year, with the Tema General Hospital maternity Unit receiving 50 hampers. The cost of the hampers is about 30,000 Ghana Cedis.
