Nsawkaw, (B/R), Dec. 6, GNA – Coalition of Youth Groups in the Tain constituency of the Bono Region has embarked on a walk to stress the need for a peaceful election in the area.
With support from the Bono Regional Peace Council and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), more than 400, mostly young people, participated in the three-hour walk held at Nsawkaw, the constituency capital.
The participants included supporters of the various political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as well as women groups, and youth associations.
Mr Suallah Abdallah Quandah, the Bono Regional Executive Secretary, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the exercise was aimed at promoting peaceful election, and scaling up public education on the disbandment of political party vigilantism.
“We have only one Ghana, therefore let us conduct ourselves in a manner that will deliver victory for mother Ghana on December 7, by making our elections free, fair and peaceful,” he said.
Addressing the participants, Mr Quandah reminded them that the Act 999 outlawed all forms of political party vigilantism, and entreated the youth to be guarded and not allowed themselves to be exploited by political parties to foment trouble before, during and after the December 7, polls.
He called on the electorate to make sure they voted in an atmosphere of peace, and to wait patiently for the outcome of the election.
“Should violence occur, it would be an impediment on both human and physical development in Tain,” he said and advised the people to always ensure they use dialogue in addressing their grievances.
Mrs Fati Bamba, the Bono Regional Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA), advised the youth to stay away from political violence and channel their exuberances into productive ventures.
“This peace walk and sensitization is very important because the Tain constituency has been identified as an election hotspot. We are, therefore, hopeful that this exercise would go a long way to promote peace before, during and beyond the December polls,” she added.
