US daily coronavirus cases top 100,000 for first time

San Francisco, Nov. 6, (dpa/GNA) – The United States saw 102,830 new corona virus cases on Wednesday, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University, the country’s first daily infections total over 100,000.

The record tally, published on Thursday, comes as the country is seeing a surge in cases while President Donald Trump falsely claims that country is “rounding the turn.”

Public health experts are worried that as winter looms and people spend more time indoors the virus will spread more rapidly, warranting renewed lockdown measures.

Fresh shutdowns have already been ordered in England, France, Italy and Germany as virus infections gain speed in Europe.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that new cases are rising in 79 per cent of the US and average daily cases have increased 20 per cent over the past week.

On Tuesday, the day of the presidential election, the US recorded its second-highest daily infections tally, with over 91,000 cases.

The surge is particularly severe in Wisconsin and other northern states.

The Trump administration has been under fire for its handling of the pandemic, which has infected more than 8.6 million people in the US and resulted in over 230,000 deaths.

Trump has also increasingly shunned the advice of public health advisers while holding massive campaign rallies and being dismissive of mask-wearing, which is essential to battling the pandemic.
