OSCE: Trump’s comments ‘harm public trust’ in democratic institutions

Washington, Nov. 5, (dpa/GNA) – US President Donald Trump’s pre-electon rhetoric undermined public trust in the country’s democratic institutions, representatives of the the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) say.

“Baseless allegations of systematic deficiencies, notably by the incumbent president, including on election night, harm public trust in democratic institutions,” said Michael Georg Link, special co-ordinator and leader of the short-term OSCE election observer mission.

Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that the US electoral system is vulnerable to voter fraud, and early Wednesday he once again falsely asserted election fraud.

The OSCE sent 102 observers from 39 countries to observe the US elections. They also highlighted concerns about campaign financing and a polarised media landscape, but noted that freedom of expression was respected ahead of the elections.
