German economy expands at record 8.5 per cent in third-quarter

Berlin, Nov. 24, (dpa/GNA) – German gross domestic product (GDP) grew by record 8.5 per cent in the third quarter as Europe’s biggest economy rebounded at a faster-than-forecast rate from a sharp downturn unleashed by the coronavirus crisis, the statistics office said on Tuesday.

The figure represented an upward revision to the Federal Statistical Office’s (Destatis) earlier preliminary estimate of an 8.2-per-cent quarter-on-quarter growth rate in the three months to the end of September.

German economic growth shrunk by 9.8 per cent in the second quarter at the height of the first wave of the global pandemic.
