Lawui (V/R), Nov. 06, GNA – The Akatsi South District Assembly on Friday honoured 20 farmers for their contribution to food security as part of the 36th National Farmers’ Day celebration.
The awardees, who were in various categories, received motor tricycles, bicycles, knapsack sprayers, wellington boots, table top fridges, cutlasses and LED television sets.
Mrs Etsey Charity Kporwuvi, 45, was adjudged the District Best Farmer and received a tricycle, cutlasses, field boot and cloth.
She cultivated 32 acres of maize, 26 acres of sweet potato, 16 acres of water melon, five acres of tomato, five acres of garden eggs, five acres of cassava, and 5.5 acres of groundnuts among other crops.
David Mikado was the first-runner up and Mr David Kpedator, the second runner up, who received various prizes.
The District Best Physically Challenged Farmer went to Mrs Mary Agbavor from Gefia, who cultivated some acreages of cassava, maize and groundnut.
Other awardees included Attipoe Baby, District Best Livestock Farmer, Ahiave Samuel, Best Crops Farmer, and Emmanuel Dewortor, Best Agriculture Extension Officer.
This year’s National Farmers’ Day was on the theme: ‘Ensuring Agribusiness Development in COVID 19; Challenges and Opportunities.’
Mr Leo Nelson Adzidogah, the Akatsi South District Chief Executive, who handed the awards to the winners at Lawui, a farming community in the District, said the Government would continue to play its key roles to improve agricultural production.
He said the Assembly was working to address the concerns of all the communities and would ensure they got their share of the national cake.
Mr Benjamin Korkortsi, Akatsi South District Director of Agriculture, expressed the need to mechanise and modernise agriculture for increased food production.
