Seoul, Oct. 10, (dpa/GNA) – The South Korean military said on Saturday that North Korean authorities had staged a large military parade, apparently to mark the 75th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party.
The parade, which was also observed by US intelligence services, took place in the early morning on Kim Il Sung Square in the capital Pyongyang, South Korea’s general staff said.
North Korea had been expected to hold a large event to mark the anniversary of the party’s founding, although none has been publicly announced.
Preparations had been observed in recent weeks. There has also been speculation that Pyongyang would unveil a new intercontinental missile.
Since a failed summit with US President Donald Trump in Vietnam in February 2019, talks on North Korea’s nuclear programme have stalled.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed at the end of 2019 to unveil a new “strategic weapon.”
