More deaths recorded in collapsed church building incident

Akyem Batabi (E/R) Oct 21, GNA – Fourteen persons have so far been confirmed dead from being trapped in the collapsed multistorey building of the Church of Prosperity, at Akyem Batabi, in the Asene Manso Akroso District.

Eight others, whose conditions were deemed critical were also receiving treatment at the hospital, Mr. Kwame Appiah Kodua the Eastern Regional Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), gave the update to the media at 1630 hours on October 21, 2020.

He said rescue teams from across the region had been called in to support the operation to find the more than 40 people believed to be trapped in the rubble.

They include personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Bureau of National Investigations, Ghana Police Service, as well as volunteers.

Additionally, sniffer dogs had also been deployed to help detect the specific spots that the victims may be trapped, he said.

Meanwhile, Akoa Isaac, the Founder of the Church of Prosperity, is also in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) to assist with investigations in the incident, which happened on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 20.

The cause of the collapse, he said, was yet to ascertained.
