Tema, Oct. 01, GNA – Residents of Tema Central, Tema East and Tema West Constituencies on Tuesday amassed at the Municipal Election Office to acquire voter Identification cards as the Electoral Commission re-opens the electoral roll for a day.
The EC is conducting a day’s registration exercise in all its district offices across the country.
The exercise would afford persons who were unable to register during the mass registration exercise to register and vote in the December polls.
At the Metropolitan Office of the EC in Tema, which supervises elections in all three Constituencies; Tema Central, East and West, a sea of residents determined to get onto the Electoral roll had gathered.
As of midday, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that not so many people had registered.
Although many were skeptical about registering before close of day, they queued in the searing sun, albeit expectantly.
Covid-19 protocols, including social distancing, were not being observed at all the three makeshift shelters for the registration, even though some persons were masked up.
A potential registrant, who gave her name as Adjoa, said she was stuck in the United Kingdom due to the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that the exercise had been tardy.
She said “if the exercise continue this slowly, many people will still be disenfranchised if the exercise is not extended.”
Officials, however expressed optimism that they would register as many people as possible before close of day.
