Alleged Kurdish militant blows himself up after Turkish police chase

Istanbul, Oct. 27, (dpa/GNA) – A suspected Kurdish militant blew himself up late Monday after being pursued by police in the southern Turkish province of Hatay.

A second suspect also fled from police but was later apprehended, the governor of Hatay province, Rahmi Dogan, said. The suspect was injured.

There were no other reports of deaths or injuries in the confrontation that took place in Iskenderun district.

The suspected militant was said to be a member of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

In recent days, security forces in the region have carried out several operations against suspected PKK members, Dogan said. The PKK is considered a terrorist organization in Turkey, Europe and the US.

Meanwhile, broadcaster NTV reported there had been a skirmish between security forces and the suspects. One of the suspects set off a hand grenade, it said.

Images published by Anadolu showed damaged vehicles and emergency vehicles at the scene.
Last week, the US embassy warned of potential terrorist attacks and hostage-taking in Turkey, especially targeting foreigners. In the past, both the Islamic State militia and the PKK have carried out major attacks in Turkey.
