NGO supports market women with PPE

Takoradi, June 19, GNA – As part of measures to ensure a successful fight against COVID-19 in the Effia-Kwesimintim Municipal Assembly, the “Smile For Change, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Takoradi, has distributed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to market women in the Municipality.

The items; alcohol-based hand sanitizers, liquid soaps and locally made face masks, were distributed to the women at the new Jubilee Market.

Madam Eunice Akesse Ussher, the Executive Director of the NGO, said it implemented policies and projects for the total welfare of women and children while empowering local communities.

The donation formed part of the organisation’s social responsibility and to encourage the women to adhere to good personal hygiene principles, especially in public places, as instructed by President Akufo-Addo and the Ghana Health Service, she said.

The organisation strives to provide strategies to help women and children to overcome their barriers to life, whether geographical, economic or social, to fully access and benefit from health services and empowerment initiatives.

“Women empowerment isn’t just something we do, it’s at the heart of everything we do. It happens on every engagement through the exchange of ideas and knowledge among our team members from diverse backgrounds with varied levels of expertise,” she said.

Madam Akesse said the protocols, including regular hand washing with soap under running water, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, social distancing and avoiding hand-shakes and crowded places were the surest ways to control the spread of the virus.

The market women commended the NGO for the support and promised to use the items to help stem the spread of the disease.
