NCCE educates Sunyani market leadership on COVID-19 prevention

Sunyani, June 25, GNA – The Bono Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has educated and sensitized the leadership of Sunyani market on the prevalence and basic safety measures for infection prevention of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The one-day campaign brought together more than 50 market queens comprising leaders of cloth and materials, vegetable, yam, cassava, cocoyam, plantain, egg and other edible and non-edible products sellers’ associations.

Others were leaders of second hand goods (clothing and footwear) dealers’ associations, artisans, entrepreneurs of other small scale businesses and food vendors.

They were taken through the need for compulsory and constant wearing of nose masks and the proper way of using it, the frequent use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers after handling money, observing the physical and social distancing, practicing respiratory hygiene and regular washing of hands with soap under running water.

Addressing the participants, Mrs. Doris Gbongbo, the Regional Director noted “the virus is threatening the survival of the human race and rapid economic progress”, hence, the campaign for the public to get deeper understanding on issues related to the virus.

There should be intensive and indepth education and knowledge on the dangers and prevention protocols to stop the virus, and this could be done easily through agencies like traders who dealt with different people from different locations, she said.

Mrs. Gbongbo said other agencies to benefit from the education were; transport unions, local council of churches, teachers’ unions and all other institutions and stakeholders necessary in battling the COVID-19 in the region.

She entreated the participants to “avoid stigmatization and be educators and ambassadors of the stop COVID-19 spread campaign”.

Mrs. Lydia Annan, the Sunyani Municipal Head of the National Board for Small Scale Industry, in an interview with Ghana News Agency lauded the initiative of the NCCE and said the campaign would enable traders to understand the COVID-19 situation well, so that they could take it seriously and protect themselves.

Mrs. Annan urged the traders to realize their activities engaged many people of different backgrounds, and must therefore adhere to all the safety protocols and precautionary measures for self-protection and protection of others by educating their customers, children, friends and other people they dealt with in the course of their business.
