Mmamiriwa community not following protocols due to lack of water

Mmamiriwa No.1 (Ash), June 17, GNA – Lack of potable water in the Mmamiriwa Number one community in the Obuasi Municipality, is forcing the residents to disobey the regular hand washing directive by the government.

The residents find it extremely difficult to get water for their daily activities and therefore, washing their hands regularly with soap under running water in order to prevent themselves from contracting the coronavirus, could be a luxury.

The problem has come about as a result of the breakdown of water systems in the community for some time now.

Mr. Francis Apoianin, Assembly member for Kunka Electoral Area, told the Ghana News Agency at Obuasi that, the water problem was making it impossible for residents to observe the hand washing protocol.

“At the moment we have a problem to access water because of the breakdown of two pipes and the only pipe left is not functioning as required, making the observance of hand washing protocol extremely impossible”, he emphasized.

Mr Apoianin said the situation if not immediately addressed could bring a lot of problem when schools were reopened.

He said currently, most people depended on water tankers for supply of water to their homes and places of work and thereby putting severe financial burden on them.

Mr Apoianin also expressed concern about the deplorable network of roads in the area and called on the district assembly and the AngloGold Ashanti, to take steps to fix them to make transportation in the area comfortable.
