Lawra (U/W), June 3, GNA – The Center for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD) has presented nine gun thermometers to the COVID-19 tasks force of Lawra and Nandom Municipalities.
The gesture is meant to enhance their work as they battle with the challenge of foreigners entering the country through unapproved routes.
Presenting the gun thermometers, Mr Mathias Jatoe, Agro-ecology/Eco WASH Manager of CIKOD, said the gesture was part of the implementation of the CIKOD Community COVID-19 Support Programme being implemented across the two Municipalities.
The project, which is being jointly implemented by CIKOD and Groundswell International with funding from the 11th Hour Project, has already built the capacity of traditional authorities in both Municipalities to enable them play a key role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
It has also made airtime on local Radio Stations available for health authorities to take advantage to educate the public on the COVID-19 protocols and others to halt the spread of the global pandemic.
Mr Jatoe noted that the project was also training some local tailors to produce nose masks in mass quantities for distribution to enhance the wearing of nose masks in the two Municipalities to stop the spread of the disease.
Mr Martin Domatier Bomba-ire, the Lawra Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) who received five of the gun thermometers on behalf of the Lawra COVID-19 Tasks force, thanked CIKOD for being a key development partner to the Municipality.
He said with the easing of restrictions, more people would be coming into contact with each other and called for action to be expedited on the production of nose masks for mass distribution.
Dr Bernard Ziem, the Lawra Municipal Director of Health promised that the gun thermometers would be put to good use to serve its intended purpose.
Assistant Superintendent of Immigration, Mr Lawrence Ashiara, the Nandom Municipal Immigration Commander who is Chairman of the Nandom Municipal COVID-19 Tasks Force expressed gratitude to CIKOD for enhancing their work through the presentation of the four gun thermometers.
He said the Nandom area had a lot of unapproved routes and that usually when they deploy officers to these areas and they happen to arrest illegal immigrants, until they brought them to the hospital, they were not able to take their temperature.
This he said posed high risk to the officers and those they come into contact with at the hospital facility, noting however that with the presentation of the gun thermometers, that risk would be reduced as officers would be able to take their temperatures immediately.
This, he said would enable them handle with caution those with very high temperatures to avoid getting infected.
