Ekwamkrom (C/R), June 1, GNA – Mrs Naana Eyiah Quansah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, on Saturday presented 10 sewing machines and accessories to 10 girls to begin a three-year apprenticeship.
The MP, also the Deputy Minister of Land, Forestry and Natural Resources, further paid a total of GH¢3,000.00 as the full apprenticeship fee for the girls.
Speaking to the media, Mrs Eyiah Quansah said the gesture was to reduce the burden on the girls’ parents.
More than 700 girls in the Constituency have so far been given similar assistance and other financial support to learn a trade in the area.
The Deputy Minister said it was regrettable that technical and vocational trainees were not given the necessary recognition in society because they have been tagged as “not academically good.”
“It is a wrong impression created by the society, which discourages Junior High School and Senior High School leavers to learn a trade and rely on white colour jobs that are non-existent”.
The MP said it was time people changed their attitude against School leavers who were eager to learn a trade, adding that government had put in place effective mechanisms in support of technical and vocational education.
The Deputy Minister, therefore, urged the masters of the apprentices to take good care of the girls to enable them to complete their training successfully to become responsible mothers in future.
On free SHS, the Deputy Minister said some students had received material and financial support after gaining admission into secondary school.
The move is to serve as motivation, inspiration and encouragement for them to study hard to get better grades to pursue tertiary education.
She disclosed that the introduction of the Free SHS by the Government was to ensure that every Ghanaian child of school going age accessed secondary education through which he or she could climb to the tertiary level.
The MP advised beneficiaries to avoid pre-marital sex and other immoral activities that could truncate their vision to become responsible adults and self-reliant.
Mrs Naana Eyiah Quansah donated bags of rice, cooking oil, and tomatoes to support 60 teachers of four private schools at Gomoa Ekwamkrom and Gomoa Jukwa who were in hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She also presented alcohol-based hand sanitizers, nose masks and other PPE to protect them against the virus.
She assured other private school teachers in the Gomoa Central Constituency who were yet to receive relief items to exercise patience as she would soon reach out to them.
