Accra, June 17, GNA – The Chinese Embassy in Ghana on Wednesday, presented quantities of medical supplies worth GHC480,000 (about 80,000 US dollars), to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, to support the fighting of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The supplies included; 15 ventilators, 20,000 medical masks, 1,600 N95 masks, 120 protective suits, 60 face shields, and 100 medical googles, in addition to some food items comprising milk, cocoa powder, and cereals among others, to cater for the nutritional needs of the patients.
Mr Shi Ting Wang, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, who presented the items to the Management of the Hospital, said the donation which was made in partnership with the Chinese community in Ghana, formed part of the Chinese Government’s effort in supporting developing countries in their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said the COVID-19 global pandemic was the most extensive to afflict humanity in a century and causing a serious crisis for the entire world, posing a daunting challenge and a great threat to human life and health.
“This is war that humanity has to fight and win,” saying China above others, deemed it a priority to help developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, to improve their capacity and performance in epidemic prevention and control.
He mentioned that in addition to the medical supplies sent to over 50 African countries and the African Union, and seven medical expert teams dispatched to the continent, China would offer more assistance to African countries, and continue to do all in its power to offer support.
On reciprocal support that both countries had enjoyed since the beginning of the outbreak of the pandemic, saying he said “Ghana has given us a lot of support,” and that China would spare no pains in supporting Ghana and other African countries in fighting the virus.
He however stated that to enhance strategic communication between China and Africa an extraordinary China-Africa Summit on solidarity against COVID-19 would be held in Beijing via a video link, where Leaders of African countries including members of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of AU and the rotating chairs of Africa’s major sub-regional organisations and the Chairperson of the AU Commission would attend upon invitation.
Mr Wang lauded the Ghanaian government on the measures put in place to fight against the virus.
Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, the Deputy Minister of Health, thanked the Chinese Government and its citizen’s resident in Ghana for their sustained support in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Present at the ceremony were Dr Emmanuel Srofenyoh, the Medical Director of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital and some medical and nursing officers of the hospital.
