50 kilometres of roads to be asphalted in Bolgatanga Township

Bolgatanga, June 14, GNA – A total of 50 kilometres of roads will be asphalted in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the Minister for Roads and Highways has said.

“So far, 21 kilometres have been completed, we want to do 50 kilometres more. In Bolgatanga alone, we are going to add 30 kilometres of asphalt overlays to the existing roads,” the sector Minister said at a news briefing in Bolgatanga.

He said the entire asphalting would cover the Bolgatanga Township, the University for Development Studies (UDS) stretch of road at Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, and would also be extended to the Bawku Municipality.

Expressing concern about several potholes on the road linking the Bolgatanga Municipality to Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District, when he later visited the District, to ascertain the extent of work, the Minister charged the Department of Urban Roads to fix all potholes on that road within a month.

“We are all happy about the work you are doing, but the start of the road is not good. So go back and put that road in shape. Within one month that road should be done to join the asphalt overlay,” he said.

The said road is characterized by several potholes linking Zuarungu to Bolgatanga through to the main Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, which had over the years caused demonstrations and calls on government from youth groups in the Municipality.

He said Bolgatanga as the Regional capital should have good asphalted roads to beautify the town and befit the status of a Regional capital.

Mr Amoako-Atta said the Department of Urban Roads under his outfit would work closely with Madam Tangoba Abayage, the Upper East Regional Minister, to ensure that the designated roads were asphalted.

He called on the Regional Minister to continue to support his Ministry and said “let us know if there are any other places we have to extend this asphalt overlay, please let us know and it will be done.”

The Atiwa West Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) also disclosed that government was working on the about 46 kilometre Bongo-Namoo stretch of feeder road in the Bongo District, “We are going to work on this road including; the bridge at Balungu,” he added.
