Accra, May 10, GNA – The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the football fraternity have commemorated the darkest day in Ghanaian football history which happened 19 years ago in an encounter involving Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
The MOYS in collaboration with the National Sports Authority (NSA) marked the 19th anniversary of the May 9th football disaster that claimed 127 lives at the Accra sports stadium.
Mr. Perry Curtis Okudzeto, Deputy Minister of MOYS, delivering the keynote address on behalf of sector Minister, Mr. Isaac Asiamah at the forecourt of the Accra Sports Stadium emphasized government commitment to ensure that the tragedy that happened 19 years
ago does not reoccur.
The GFA in a statement said they are committed to honoring the memory of the lost souls by continuing our efforts to improve safety standards at match venues.
“The GFA wishes to appeal to all football administrators, security officers, medicals, and indeed football-loving Ghanaians to co-operate with the federation and other stakeholders to ensure we don’t experience such incidents in our game again.
“We call on clubs to continue educating their fans on the laws of the game and to remain law-abiding before, during, and after league matches.
“Let us constantly remind ourselves that never again should such a tragedy befall our beautiful game and our beloved nation,” excerpts of the statement said.
