Langbinsi Regent calls for investigations into increasing armed robbery

Langbinsi (NE/R) May 12, GNA – Mr Andrews Basigi, the Regent of Langbinsi, in the North East Region, has called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify investigations into the rampant spate of armed robbery attacks in the Langbinsi area.

He said armed robbery activities in the community had over the years threatened the livelihood of residents and created a bad image for the area. “This canker has tarnished the image of the community.”
He expressed worry that anytime arrests were made, the suspects were usually from his community, adding that the “Unfortunate aspect is that when these armed robbers are arrested, they are released and back into the community.”

“These armed robbers have killed, robbed, and maimed people. Sometimes they are caught at it yet the Ghana Police Service let them go because they say the evidence is not enough.”

Mr Basigi made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Langbinsi, following a recent case of an armed robbery involving about six suspects who allegedly conspired to rob one Mr Sweidu Seidu, a Langbinsi based Businessman, of GH¢26,660.00.

“I want to plead with the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the right thing is done professionally so that these people will be brought to book.”

When the GNA contacted the North East Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Charles Domanban, he confirmed the recent robbery attack and said the suspects; Mumuni Haruna, Kwame Samed, Issahak Abdulai, Mohammed Ayisha, and Ajara Abdul-Rauf were put before the court in Tamale.

He said the armed robbery attacks at Langbinsi compelled his outfit to assign a patrol vehicle to the community, “So we have been on our toes from January this year. We patrol the area, especially on market days. This has kept the armed robbers away for some time. Unfortunately this current incident happened and we had to put in a lot of intelligence, which led to their arrest, and retrieval of the money.”

A situation report from the Ghana Police Service in the Region on the recent robbery incident indicated that the said amount from the Businessman was given to his Assistant, Suspect Mumuni Haruna and his son Sweidu Amima to be given to one Adam Seidu at Gambaga.

“Suspect Mumuni Haruna however contacted suspect Kwame Samed and lsshaku Abdulai and planned with them to attack and rob them of the said amount. At about 0530hours of the same day, suspect Mumuni Haruna and Sweidu Aminu were on their way on a motorbike to Gambaga.”

The report said “On reaching a section of the road near Boku, suspect Kwame Samed and Issaku Abdulai appeared from the bush, fired a gunshot and ordered them to surrender the money which they did. Suspect Kwame Samed and Issahaku Abdulai then took the money to their house and handed it to suspect Ayisha Mohammed, wife of Kwame Samed.”

The Police report said Mr Seidu later reported the case to the Police and in the course of the investigation, intelligence was picked up that the robbery was committed by suspect Kwame Samed and Issahaku Abdulai who were immediately arrested.

“While in custody, suspect Isshaku Abdulai managed to send information to his wife, suspect Ajara Abdulai Rawuf to go for the money from suspect Ayisha Mohammed and hide it. Police retrieved the money during the investigation,” the report added.
