Ejura (Ash), May 13, GNA – The Ejura Sekyedumase Municipal Assembly is stepping up public education on COVID-19 as part of efforts to prevent infection and a possible community spread of the disease in the Municipality.
The Municipality is one of the areas in the Region yet to record a case and authorities are leaving no stone unturned to maintain that enviable status.
It is for this reason that the Assembly has embarked on series of stakeholder engagements on the need to observe safety protocols by the larger community in line with the municipal response plan to counter the pandemic.
In the forefront of the public education is the Municipal Emergency Health Committee, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Information Services Department (ISD) and the environmental health workers of the Assembly.
Mr Salisu Bamba, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that the Assembly had adopted intensive education on social distancing and other safety protocols as the main strategy to fight the coronavirus.
He said he had personally been actively involved in the public education by regularly addressing the people on local radio stations to demonstrate leadership in the COVID-19 fight.
The MCE explained that the intensified education was informed by flagrant disregard for the recommended safety protocols especially social distancing and wearing of nose masks.
He cited about three incidents where people attempted to congregate for social events such as marriage ceremony and prayers despite the ban on social gatherings and stressed the Assembly’s determination to enforce the restrictions.
He said the Assembly had started free distribution of 10,000 pieces of nose masks to the public, having noticed that number of people who wear nose masks in public was not encouraging.
“We have so far supplied some masks to the police, market women, drivers and other high risk groups in Ejura and it would be extended to other surrounding communities in the coming days,” Mr Bamba assured.
He particularly urged the Zongo communities to observe the preventive protocols and avoid any form of congregation, reminding them that COVID-19 was real and deadly.
