Accra, April 29, GNA – The Mass Action Committee (MAC), a civil society organisation has condemned the alleged thronging of City Escape Hotel in Accra by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress to disrupt an ongoing meeting by the Electoral Commission.
“To the extent that these actions violate our laws, we demand that the police administration arrest and prosecute the perpetrators,” a statement signed by Mr Atik Mohammed, the Executive Secretary of MAC, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said.
The reported incidence allegedly led by Mr Sam George, the Member of Parliament for the Ningo Prampram Constituency, occurred on Saturday 25th April, 2020.
The said meeting, the statement said, was one of the routine meetings the Commission held prior to major events on their calendar, and therefore felt no need to request the presence of security officials.
It was also mindful of the safety protocols of COVID-19 as were announced by the President and therefore, observed them during the meeting, the statement noted.
However, it criticized an alleged exploitation of the absence of security personnel by members of the NDC to mass up at the venue issuing all kinds of threats and demanding that, the Commission halts the meeting.
“We find these actions repugnant and should not be allowed to go unanswered. We further contend that, these actions could have degenerated into chaos but for the timely arrival of the police and national security officials.
The Committee believed the action violated the laws of the country.
“To this end, we will be petitioning the Inspector General of Police to cause an investigation to be conducted into the matter and those found culpable dealt with according to law,” the statement said.
It urged the Electoral Commission to engage the security agencies for adequate provision of security during their meetings and activities, be they routine or otherwise.
The country’s democracy was fought for and consolidated through the blood and toil of many patriots, hence, the need to protect it, the statement added.
