Ho, April 16, GNA – Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Secretary of National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on Government to support communities along the Ghana-Togo border in the Region, following the closure of the border and markets to contain coronavirus disease.
He said communities in the Ketu North and South, Akatsi North, Agortime Ziofe, Adaklu, Ho Central, Ho West, Afadzato South and Hohoe areas whose livelihoods had been negatively impacted by the coronavirus-related restrictions, needed to be given foodstuffs and other supports to cushion them during the period.
Mr Gunu who made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said a large number of people in those areas, as a result of the restrictions, had difficulty in accessing quality meals twice daily.
“Government must not wait to lockdown the Region before providing the people with food, because their situation currently is as worse as in lockdown areas,” he said, adding that any further delays was likely to compromise the fight against the virus in the Region.
The Regional Secretary also advised against the distribution of food and other relief items along party lines, saying such practices “defeated the purpose of nationalism, patriotism and solidarity needed to fight the covid-19 pandemic”.
Mr Gunu also appealed to the citizenry to follow all protocols outlined to help fight the disease
