Accra, March 31, GNA- The Valley View University (VVU) on Tuesday donated items to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters to motivate personnel in discharging their humanitarian duties during the two-week restriction of movement due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The items worth GH¢ 3,000 are 200 loaves of bread, 300 bags of sachet water and 10 packs of bottled water, produced by the Food Services Department of the University.
The University would do similar donation to the Headquarters, including 100 loaves of bread and 100 bags of sachet water.
Pastor Odomse Akuoko-Nyantakyi, Registrar, VVU who presented the items on behalf of the University said the gesture was to support the Police personnel in executing their operations during the partial lockdown in the city.
The President on Friday March 27, 2020 announced a two-week restriction of movement in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area, which include Awutu Senya East, and the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan area which started on Monday, March 30, at 0100 Hours.
The decision, imposed under the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 20202, is part of stricter measures to contain and halt the spread of the COVID-19 in the country, especially in Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi, which have been identified as hotspots of the infection.
Pastor Akuoko-Nyantakyi said the gesture was necessary in providing critical support services to boost the morale of the personnel to work in an effective and efficient manner.
Pastor Akuoko-Nyantakyi said the University would continue to provide social services to help contain the pandemic and urged other institutions to come to the aid of security personnel deployed to ensure stability during the imposition of restriction of movement.
Over 2,000 Joint Security Task Force were deployed from the army, police and other security personnel to parts of the country to ensure orderliness during the partial lockdown issued by the President.
The directives comes as parts of measures to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus outbreak as the country’s confirmed case count as at Sunday, March 31 has reached 161, with a death toll of 5.
DCOP Frederick Adu-Anim, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander receiving the items on behalf of the Service commended the University for the Donation.
“We are overwhelmed by your benevolent gesture,” she said.
He pledged to use the items for its intended purposes and appealed to other organizations to support the security services to continue to execute its duty of protecting lives and property.
