Paga (U/E) March 31, GNA – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has presented office equipment to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service at Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.
The items which would facilitate the work of the newly constructed office of DOVVSU in the District, included office furniture, computer and accessories, one air conditioner, office cabinet, and ceiling fans.
Madam Yvonne Wonchua, an Administrative Officer at the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council and the Regional Focal Person of the UNFPA who presented the items at a brief ceremony at Paga, said the gesture by the UNFPA was in accordance with its line of work against sexual and gender based violence.
She said a 2018 annual performance review report of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the Region, which indicated high prevalence of teenage pregnancies in six Districts in the Region, prompted the UNFPA to support the DOVVSU to reduce reported cases of violence.
Madam Wonchua mentioned the Builsa South District, Talensi, Nabdam, Bawku West, Bongo and Kassena-Nankana West as Districts in the Region with high prevalence of teenage pregnancies.
“This informed the UNFPA’s decision to select these Districts to support DOVVSU of the Ghana Police Service to discharge its mandate effectively,” she said.
She said similar items would be presented to the DOVVSU in the Talensi District, and subsequently, the remaining four Districts which were yet to establish the DOVVSU, would receive their share.
She disclosed that some residents and organizations at Paga came together to build the structure to support Police activities in the area.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Oppong Agyare, who received the items on behalf of the Regional Police Commander, thanked the UNFPA for the gesture, and gave the assurance that the items would be put to good use to derive the intended purpose.
In the same vein, the District Chief Executive for the area, Mr Gerard Ataogye, thanked the Organization for supporting the efforts of government to ensure law and order, and admonished officials of the Ghana Police Service to properly maintain the items to facilitate their work in the District.
