FDB destroys seized goods valued at GH¢ 56,000.00

Kumasi, April 17, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Board (FDB) on Monday destroyed various unsafe products valued at about GH¢ 56,000.00, seized from various locations in the region.

These included large quantities of “Butubutu Barimansuro Ginger Gin” fruit juice, canned fish and drinks as well as root and tree barks.

Mrs Nora Terlabie, the FBD Regional Officer, said these had either expired, unwholesome, unregistered or the labeling not conforming to the standard rules.

She cautioned consumers to be more alert and avoid patronizing expired and unregistered products.

She described as troubling, the situation where many people appear not to be keen about quality assurance and therefore do not bother to read the label on goods that they buy.

She noted for example that many alcoholic beverages on the market have not been registered and as such their safety could not be guaranteed.

Mrs Terlabie urged traders to regularly check the labels on products in their shops and warned they would be arrested for selling unwholesome products to the public.

She said Kumasi is now a 24-hour trading city so the FDB would intensify its monitoring activity, day and night, at every location in the metropolis.

The Board has stepped up its public education to sensitize the people and help them to take issues about food and drugs safety seriously.
