Election 2024: NCCE engages political party activists in peace games

By Caesar Abagali

Funsi, (UW/R), Nov. 26, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged political party youth activists in the Wa East Constituency in fun games as part of efforts towards promoting peace among the youth ahead of the 2024 general election.

Activists of the various political parties and other interest groups in the Funsi zone played football to promote cohesion among the youth with the aim of preventing election-related violence.

It was also geared towards promoting peace and tolerance among the youth, which was a prerequisite for maintaining the nation’s peace before, during and after the election.

The Wa East District Directorate of the NCCE organised the games, which brought together activists from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other smaller political parties and interest groups to constitute two non-partisan teams for the games to promote unity among them.

Mr. Luke Domelagr Wiedong, the Wa East District Director of NCCE, urged the youth to embrace peace, live in harmony with each other and accommodate contrary political views.

“Politics is about development and no amount of insults on people you deem as opponents and defacing of posters and billboards of other political parties and candidates will translate into votes,” he indicated.

Mr. Wiedong reminded the youth that promoting national cohesion and development required citizens to work together as a community and not on grounds of political affiliation, religious beliefs and ethnic basis.

He cautioned them against indiscipline, especially during this critical period of election, which was a threat to peaceful coexistence.

Mr. Wiedong said every Ghanaian was obliged by the 1992 Constitution to foster national unity and live in harmony with others.

He stressed the need for them to avoid violence and must not allow themselves to be used by politicians as instruments of destruction for their selfish gains.

“Please be aware that anyone who violates the electoral laws will be dealt with according to laid down procedures irrespective of his or her status or support base,” Mr. Wiedong admonished.

On his part, Mr. Ali Darijan Habib, a Civic Education Officer with the Wa East NCCE office, encouraged the youth to give peace a chance by avoiding extremist activities.

He said those activities could disturb the peace and security currently enjoyed in the district, the region and the country in general.

Mr. Habib noted that peaceful coexistence was a shared responsibility and that all efforts should be made towards strengthening peace building.

Some of the youth, who participated in the games, expressed gratitude to the NCCE and gave the assurance that they would ensure their campaign activities were devoid of violence to help preserve the cherished peace of the district.
