Strasbourg, Nov. 27, (dpa/GNA) – The European Parliament on Wednesday backed the new European Commission in a majority vote.
The team of 26 commissioners is to start work on December 1 under the leadership of already re-elected European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The EU’s legislative chamber confirmed the new commission with 370 votes in favour, 282 votes against and 36 abstentions.
Ahead of the vote, von der Leyen said that improving the bloc’s competitiveness will be among the first priorities of her second mandate.
The new EU commission still needs to be approved by the member states, but the step is considered a formality.
