Cairo, Nov. 25, (dpa/GNA) – A boat carrying 45 people, most of them tourists, sank in the Red Sea on Monday, Egyptian authorities said, adding that some people have been rescued.
The boat was carrying 31 tourists of different nationalities and a 14-member crew, a statement by the Red Sea governorate said.
Red Sea Governor Major General Amr Hanafi said some people have been rescued near the Wadi al-Gemal area, south of the tourist city of Marsa Alam. However, he did not specify their number.
A search and rescue aircraft transported some of those rescued to receive medical care, while the rest were going to be transferred to safety by the al-Fateh frigate, the governor said.
The boat began a six-day diving trip on Sunday. Authorities received the call for help early Monday, after which a search and rescue operation began.
Intensive search operations continue in coordination with the navy and the armed forces, Hanafi added. GNA
