Akim Swedru (E/R), Nov. 19, GNA – The Birim South District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the District Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC), has organised an inter-faith peace football tournament for the youth in Akim Swedru.
Mr. Yaw Somuah, Birim South District NCCE Director, said the event created an atmosphere that paved the way for the NCCE and the IPDC members to interact with the youth on peace and to talk about violent free elections.
The youth participants were drawn from various churches, mosque and political parties.
He said peaceful elections were crucial for a stable and prosperous Ghana and so it was incumbent on Ghanaians to ensure peace in the upcoming December elections.
During the interaction section, Police Inspector Francis Nyarko, Station Officer at Akim Aduasa, educated the youth on the rules and laws governing the state, explaining that the laws were superior to every individual including political party leaders.
“The laws protect our general safety and ensure our rights as citizens against abuses by other people, by organizations, and by the government itself,” he said.
He advised them to desist from any acts of violence before, during and after the elections to avoid being caught up by the law.
He described electoral violence as any acts or coercion, intimidation or physical harm perpetrated to affect an electoral process.
The football mini tournament was participated in by 85 male youth, with 60 forming three teams of 20 members each and the remaining 25 supporting from the stands.
