Wa, (UW/R), Nov. 19, GNA – Political party youth activists have been urged to uphold and jealously safeguard Ghana’s peace and security as the nation gears up for the 2024 general election on December 7.
They have also been advised to see the country’s peace as delicate but vital for their wellbeing and development hence all efforts must be put in place to ensure peace prevailed before, during and after the election.
Mr. Nurideen Mumuni, the Wa Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), gave the advice in Wa during an engagement with the political party youth activists in the Wa Central Constituency.
The NCCE organised the engagement as part of its civic responsibility and activities to sensitise the public to ensure the upcoming election was event-free.
It was under the “Preventing and Containing Violence Extremism (PCVE) action in Ghana” project funded by the European Union (EU) as part of efforts of the government to prevent violence extremism in Ghana especially in this critical period of the election.
The participants, who included representatives of the People’s National Convention (PNC), National Democratic Congress (NDC), New Patriotic Party (NPP) and some youth groups, were exposed to some horrible war scenes recorded in some African countries including Liberia.
Mr. Mumuni indicated that Ghana was in the “eye of the world” as a beacon of peace and democracy in the West Africa sub-region and the actions and inactions of the youth in this electioneering would determine the nation’s fate in upholding its “glory”.
He said: “The future of this country rests in your hands. Your actions or inactions can destabilise or build the nation and the peace that we have been enjoying over the years.
“It’s a reminder for all of us to put our hands on deck to ensure that we conduct this election peacefully.
“If the politicians want you to cause violence, tell them to let their children and families take the lead; after all it’s their children that will benefit from the politicians’ gains”.
Mr. Tahiru Lukman, the Chief Executive Officer of IDEAPATH Consult, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADO1) Mr. Iddrisu Imran, the Acting Wa Municipal Commander of the
Ghana National Fire Service and Inspector Tia Latif of the Ghana Police Service facilitated the engagement.
The participants were taken through identifying and countering misinformation and disinformation, the role of the youth in promoting peace and the need for and importance of peaceful coexistence and tolerance.
Mr. Lukman appealed to the youth to uphold their integrity through responsible use of social media and not to allow themselves to be exploited for political gains.
“Given the context of Ghana’s election 2024, young people play a critical part in our democratic dispensation for Ghana to consolidate our democratic gains,” he stated.
