Kumasi, Nov. 16. GNA – Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, has visited Information Communication Technology (ICT) centres designated for girls in selected Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region.
The centres, which were established by the Ministry in collaboration with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) is to provide ICT skills for girls in Senior High Schools.
The idea is to arouse the interest of more girls in the study of ICT and provide them opportunity to pursue careers in ICT.
Eighteen girls were selected from some Senior High Schools in the Kumasi Metropolis and trained in Cyber Security, Coding, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, File Folders and Programming.
The Minister’s visit took her to Kumasi Senior High School, Kumasi Anglican Senior High School, Serwaah Nyarko Senior High School, Pentecost Senior High School, and Seventh Day Adventist Senior High School.
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful, said girls traditionally do not like ICT and mathematics and that the initiative was a deliberate effort to demystify this notion.
The government, she hinted, would continue to establish ICT centre across the country, stressing that both boys and girls must have equal opportunities to ICT.
She announced plans to establish ICT Trust Fund for girls and called on stakeholders and institutions to support the initiative when introduced to expose as many girls as possible to ICT and extend the knowledge to their peers.
Girls must have confidence to pursue careers in ICT and STEM education, the Minister indicated.
