Accra, Nov. 15, GNA- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing healthcare in Ghana with a donation to the National Diabetes Management and Research Center of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Church donated over US$200,000 worth of modern medical and non-medical equipment to the National Diabetes Management and Research Center.
A statement issued in Accra by the Church said the donation was aimed to improve healthcare access for over 10,000 diabetes patients treated annually.
It said the equipment, which includes frost-free freezers, hospital beds, ECG machines, crash trolleys, physiotherapy machines, and more, would enhance the Center’s capacity to deliver quality care to patients.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), diabetes is responsible for 1.5 million deaths globally each year, making this contribution timely and critical.
Dr. Yacoba Atiase, Director of the National Diabetes Management and Research Center, expressed her gratitude for the donation saying, “With this donation, our Center is closer to becoming a one-stop facility for our patients.”
She said diabetes was a growing problem, especially in terms of mortality, and these resources would significantly help us combat the disease.
Elder Alfred Kyungu, Africa West Area President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, emphasized that the donation reflected the Church’s commitment to following the teachings of Jesus Christ, particularly His mission to heal the sick.
“This move is about applying the Saviour’s teachings, particularly the second greatest commandment to love our neighbours as ourselves. Our motivation is purely driven by the commandment to love, and we believe in supporting each other through acts like this,” he said.
He called for proper maintenance of the equipment, stressing that the resources were donated by Church members worldwide.
“We hope these resources will be a beacon of hope, love, and peace for all who use them,” he added.
Dr. Frank Owusu Sekyere, the Acting CEO of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, applauded the Church’s continued support, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility in healthcare.
“This donation is a remarkable contribution to the hospital’s mission to provide excellent healthcare services to Ghanaians,” he said.
