Accra, Nov. 08, GNA – The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region has deployed its District Road Improvement Program (DRIP) equipment into the Electoral Areas in the municipality.

The successful deployment of the equipment on Wednesday November 6, 2024, also marked another giant step for the government to improve the road network in the Municipality.

The DRIP is an initiative of the Government of Ghana, intended to empower Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) with the tools and resources needed to improve areas with poor and deplorable road networks across the country.

The programme also seeks to address the pressing need for roads maintenance and construction equipment in MMDAs, fostering sustainable improvements that will enhance connectivity and spur economic activities.

A statement issued and signed by the assembly in Accra on Friday said by equipping local authorities with those vital resources, the program would ensure that road projects were completed efficiently and to the highest standards.

Commissioning the equipment, Mr. Boye Laryea, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly said the dispatch of the equipment to serve the various communities in the Municipalities reinforced the government’s commitment to deepening local governance in all its facets.

Mr. Laryea said the bold vision by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would result in improving road quality and connectivity to facilitate better access to essential services and economic activities, hence reducing the challenges of vehicular mobility and reducing maintenance cost of vehicles.

The MCE indicated that operators have been trained to man the equipment with all the necessary processes in place to ensure that the Municipality puts the machines to good use.

The MCE noted that the project has the potential to create thousands of direct and in-direct jobs for the teeming youth in the Municipality adding that the program offers opportunities for positions ranging from operators and mechanics through to assistant operators as well as providing extensive continuous training for these operators.

Mr. Laryea was hopeful that the DRIP equipment would be used for its intended purpose in order to prolong its lifespan.

Present at the ceremony was Mr. Francis K. Mensah, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Kwame Brefo Boateng, the Municipal Development Planner, Mr. Joel Dery, Head of Transport, Mrs. Irene Ofei Addo, the Municipal Roads Engineer and other staff of the Assembly.
