Sunyani, Oct 7, GNA- The 40th National Farmers Day celebration will award 11 deserving farmers in the Bono Region, Mr Denis Abugri Amenga, the Bono Regional Director, Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has announced.
They would receive awards for their immeasurable contributions to the fisheries and cocoa sectors, Mr Amengo stated in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, saying an agriculture extension officer in the region would also receive an award.
He advised farmers who believed they qualify for or deserve awards to always participate in the enlistment processes.
He explained that some packages supplied to farmers who attended the annual awards, were just incentives to motivate them and not an award prize.
Mr Amenga used the session to respond to certain complaints made by some farmers concerning the annual awards celebration.
Some aggrieved farmers in the Sunyani Municipality had earlier expressed concern about the celebration of the Farmers Day, which according to them was not beneficial to some of them who deserved the awards.
However, Mr Amenga explained that items such as the Wellington boots, key bar soaps, machetes, wax print and others given to farmers at the event was only a show of appreciation for their participation.
He explained that the award winners also took part in enlistment and screening processes, and their farms were assessed too.
Mr Amenga indicated that it was always the responsibility of the various Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to bus farmers to the event, however some of the farmers had to arrange for their own transportation due to their large numbers.
He said this year no regional celebration would be held; however, the various Districts and Municipal assemblies would organise the celebration at the local level.
The Regional awards winners would join the national celebration, which would be held in Accra.
