Dapoore, (UER), Nov. 02, GNA – The Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM), a gender-focused Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with support from ActionAid Ghana, has inspired students of four schools in the Talensi and Nabdam Districts, to explore career paths with insights from industry professionals.

The beneficiary schools included Dapoore and Kulpeliga Primary and Junior High Schools in the Talensi District, and Kotintabig and Nyogbare Primary and Junior High Schools in the Nabdam District.

The career day, organised in the various schools featured a series of activities, including drama and poetry recitals with professionals from various fields, including the Ghana Health Sealth, security services, and the fashion industry, interacting with the pupils on their personal experiences.

Ms Nancy Awinbisa Amiziah, the Project Officer at WOM, indicated that the career day activity formed part of the organisation’s effort in the educational sector, as one of its thematic areas in supporting pupils, especially orphans, to stay in school.

“The reason why we are doing this career day is to motivate the students to stay in school and bring professionals that they are not familiar with, to share their stories of how they struggled and how they overcame the challenges that they faced into becoming who they are today,” she stated.

She said that would not only motivate the students to stay in school but also inspire those who may be facing some challenges to brace themselves, as they would get to know that they could overcome such challenges to become whatever professionals they desired to be.

Dr Umu-Hera Kanyan Kassim, a Medical Officer at the Upper East Regional Hospital, sharing her personal experiences of how she hawked on the street of Accra to fend for herself, urged the students to study hard, assuring that there were organisations who were ready to support brilliant but needy students.

She said she personally benefitted from a scholarship throughout her education, and the pupils could be lucky like her if they studied hard.

Mr Dennis Akurubire Adoleyine, the Secretary of the Upper East Regional branch of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association, encouraged the students to commit to their books and choose career paths they were comfortable with, and capable of succeeding, not rushing into doing courses they had no passion for.

Master Benjamin Alibo, an orphan and a form three student at the Dapoore JHS, said he had the desire of becoming an Architect, and the stories by the various professionals had inspired him to study hard, with the determination of succeeding through hard work.

Mr Mohammed Abdallah, the Head Teacher of the Dapoore Primary School, thanked the organisation for the event, emphasising that it had motivated the students to pay keen attention, which would affect their academics positively.
