Sunyani, Oct. 30, GNA – The fortunes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in winning the December 7, Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in the Sunyani East constituency appears brighter, as work on eight-kilometre asphalt overlay begins in Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital.

The Bono Regional Office of the Department of Urban is supervising the work on the government’s funded project which commenced at the Sunyani Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday October 29, 2024.

During a visit to the CBD on Wednesday, drivers, shop owners and storekeepers, as well as petty traders praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for reshaping the access roads in the enclave.

Some of the commercial drivers, who could not hide their joy, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in a random interview that the asphalt overlay project alone had inspired some of them and aroused their confidence in the NPP.

According to the drivers, most of them were annoyed about the worsened condition of the access roads in the enclave, a situation which they added was making the NPP unpopular saying, the work on the project had therefore raised their hopes in the government.

Some traders and shop owners also commended Alhaji Bawumia, the Election 2024 Flagbearer of the NPP for the asphalt overlay.

“Bawumia promised he will reshape the CBD roads. Some of us did not take him seriously because we have heard these promises so many times from politicians”, Stephen Asare, a storekeeper stated, and added that “some of us now believe Dr Bawumia can walk the talk”.

In her view, Mad Joyce Amankwaa, a petty trader described the timing for the project execution as unfavourable for the NPP, saying “if we can, then we should have done this a long time”.

Nonetheless, Mad Amankwaa who said she remained a staunch and loyal member of the NPP since 1992 said the project execution would widen the votes of the NPP in both the Presidential and Parliamentary polls.

On completion, another trader and dealer in second clothing at the CBD, Mr Kofi Amponsah, noted that the project would open the CBD for thriving economic activities and commended the government.

Mrs Victoria Darkwa, the Bono Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads told the GNA in an interview that work on the asphalt overlay covered 15 kilometres, saying work on the remaining seven kilometres would also begin at Odomase, the Sunyani West District capital.

She therefore called on the residents, traders and commercial drivers to endeavour to cooperate with the contractors.
