Borae (O/R), Oct. 27, GNA – Mr Robert Boame, Oti Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on the youth of Borae, a community in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti region, to embark on activities that would protect Ghana’s position as a beacon of democracy.
He said there were violent extremist groups in and around Ghana waiting for violence to spark during the 2024 elections so they could carry out their nefarious activities hence the need for the citizenry to do all they could to avoid violence during the electioneering period.
Mr Boame addressing the youth during a day’s engagement, which was supported by the European Union (EU), admonished the youth to be alert on strangers who brought them gifts and other promises of job opportunities since some of those actions were ways violent extremist groups recruited the youth.
He said the dangers of joining violent extremist groups included breaking of the country’s security systems which led to instability, corruption, under-development and violation of human rights.
Mr Boame said as the 2024 general elections drew closer, the youth needed to conduct themselves very well for there to be peace before, during and after the elections.
The youth programme form part of a series of engagement to create awareness on the need for peace before, during and after the 2024 general election as well as the activities of violent extremist groups in the West African sub-region.
Mr Abass Yussif, Krachi Nchumuru District Director, NCCE called on the youth to see themselves as the future leaders of Ghana and should stay away from activities that would destroy the country as a result of political power.
He advised them against carrying guns and other weapons to political rallies as those events were intended to convince citizens to vote.
Mr Yussif noted that insulting political opponents, defacing party posters, voting on tribal or ethnic and religious lines only created division among the citizenry which should not be encouraged.
